Warmer winter brings malaria scare

Hello I’m Iola reporting for BBC school news report.
As February’s 2nd and 3rd weekends bring warmer and longer days, the public is enjoying the warmer weather, but doctors fear another Malaria outbreak, after last year, when there was an increase in the virus due to heavy rainfall. Although the outbreaks would be rare they are possible. Flooding is thought to have an impact on the safety of drinking water with increased bacteria in reservoirs.
“Malaria has been seen in these islands in the past, and it is not impossible that it will return repeatedly if the UK experiences more tropical temperatures and rain on the scale experienced last summer.” The spokeswoman for the Health Protection Agency said.
Hospitals have been warned to prepare for malaria and other tick-born viruses in the wake of this nerve-racking discovery.
On the other hand, due to warmer winters, less elderly and poorly people are dying from the cold.
"Our nearest continental neighbor, France, has already experienced a severe heat wave, with thousands of people dying, mostly the old and frail, so it was very clearly seen by scientists as possible here within a short timeframe." The HPA said of upcoming heat waves.

CAMDEN FIRE CAUSES CHAOS!

Residents had to evacuate their homes last Saturday as a huge fire raged through Camden Town.

At their peak the flames reached 30ft, and there were fears gas canisters may be in the vicinity. Eyewitness Nick Pomfret said of the fire: "It's absolutely huge, there's smoke everywhere and it looks quite scary."

The stables were left unharmed, but The Hawley Arms and other residential property suffered major damage. Many market storage areas were destroyed, causing devastation to stall owners in the Camden Lock Market.
The fire also disrupted Camden’s attraction as a tourist destination. It usually receives up to 300,000 visitors each weekend. The commercial area lost is expected to be rebuilt in about six months.

At 7:20pm the fire brigade was contacted and police cleared thousands of people from the area and closed off roads.
"A number of residents have been evacuated from their homes. Camden Council is working with the emergency services and other agencies involved in the incident to do everything we can to help all those affected.” A spokesperson for Camden Council said.

The fire took around 100 firefighters with the aid of 20 fire engines to control. Although some were trapped, there were no reports of any injuries or deaths. Talacre Sports Centre is being used as a temporary refuge centre for those who have been forced from their homes.

What we did

Yo, we are the hampstead peoples.
We got the train here and then spoke to nick. Afterwards, we chose our jobs, and then chose something to write about. It had to come to about 200 words. Then, when we had finished, we filmed with green screen. Cool eh?

Ienjoyed working at the clc today. It was good fun and interesting to find out what it is like at BBC and how a news report is made. My favourite part of this trip is getting to be the editor and being able to make up news reports and filming them. However i enjoyed all of the trip.

Rowan Won't stand down

Hello. =]

Hello, I’m Olivia reporting for Hampstead BBC school report.
Archbishop Rowan Williams is apologizing for any miss-conception over what he said, but does not at all regret what he said . He told England’s general Synod- the churches governing body “I believe quite strongly that it is not inappropriate for a pastor of the Church of England to address the perceived concerns of other religious communities and try and bring them into better public focus.”
He believed that “some of what has been heard is a very long way indeed from what has been said”. He also apologized for any unclarity in what he said.
A week ago Rowan Williams said that Sharia law was “unavoidable”.
However, amongst the criticism he has received, the Prime Minister praised his “integrity” and conservative MP a Robert Key, a synod member said William’s speech was “well received.”
So, for now, it looks like Rowan Williams is standing strong.
Back to you in the studio, Olivia.

Clamp down on downloads

Internet users who download illegal music or films could be banned from the internet. If you get suspected of an illegal download you will receive an email for a first offence and if you receive the third email you could possibly be blocked off the internet. The proposal comes from a green paper on the creative industries.
A spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association said, “Every right thinking body knows that self-regulation is much the better option in these areas.”
But roz groome, vice-president of anti-piracy for NBC Universal said, “we welcome the signal from Government that it takes seriously the damage caused by online caused by online copyright infringement.”
BT, Tiscali, Orange and Virgin Media - are already in talks with studios on a joint voluntary agreement to share information on web violators.
